Anatomy of a chair
Because we humans come in all shapes and sizes, a great chair should be fitted to your body, like a couture gown or a tailored suit. For comfort and support, the frame should be designed for perfect pitch and seat density, much like a mattress (soft, medium, or firm).
Chairs take a beating, so to hold up over a lifetime of bouncing, rocking, and even standing, we designed ours with a hardwood frame of kiln-dried maple, braced like a suspension bridge. An inner spring seat with metal coils, hand-tied with cord and overlaid with horsehair, provides tight cushion support. For bodies that prefer a less lofty seat, medium-density foam will make for a looser fit, wrapped with a down blanket for softness.
It all comes down to the tush test: before the fabric is applied you should sit in the chair to make certain your spine is supported and the cushion density is just right. Add show wood legs, finished with silver leaf, and you’re sitting pretty. Or getting cozy with an ottoman and two chairs at either end.
Now let’s curl up and have a chat.
