why we love a white kitchen (It Just Works)
We can agree that color is celebrating a long-due moment. Color and I are old friends. I use it purposefully, but sparingly, adjusting for how much natural light is coming into the room. Just last week we got client approval on an apple green color scheme for what will be a zesty, happy kitchen.
As we embrace this joyful trend, let’s take a step back and consider the anti-trend: the classic white kitchen. It just works, and for a host of reasons.
First, a white kitchen reads as fresh and hygienic: we want to see what we’re eating and how it’s made. Nothing whets our appetite like the sight of fresh produce — or a bowl of mouthwatering fruit — against a gleaming white countertop. And you don’t have to be a chef to appreciate a clean, white surface for food prep and a white cast-iron sink for rinsing vegetables.
A good kitchen is a place for hanging out with family, conversing with friends, dining, cooking, reading the news, opening takeout cartons, and plating food beautifully. We like watching the bird feeder outside the kitchen window. The kitchen is where the life of the home happens and white makes a quiet backdrop. If you’re considering color, don’t be seduced by pretty pictures on a screen. How does it look in the room? In natural light? Take it in with your own two eyes and don’t discount the timeless beauty of a white kitchen.
