walls can talk

When I begin a new room my first focus is the walls. What are the view lines? What should the focus be at eye level? In this living room the client wanted a concert grand piano, so that became the focal point. I painted the walls a muted teal to contrast with the high-gloss black of the piano. The reflective surface of the concert grand presented an opportunity: a maze on natural linen by Valerie Jaudon that suggests musical notation, a visual improvisation echoing the lines played on the piano.

And while the audience is transported by the music, they can chuckle at this giant earthenware rooster, unglazed and crowing about heaven knows what. A visual counterpoint that is just pure joie de vivre.

Scanning the room, a fireplace mantel, and a humble window are transformed to frame family heirloom pieces. These are the visual stories, personal and improvised, that set the tone for a beautiful room.
